Integration of knowledge management systems and business processes using multi-agent systems

Applications of agents in supporting the organisation's operations largely refer to issues connected with business processes and management of the organisation knowledge. Multi-agent systems are perceived as an element that performs and automates business processes of an organisation and substitutes its IT systems and users. Agent solutions are also perceived as tools designed to automate or support the user in different stages of the life cycle of the knowledge management system. This paper presents the concept of an original solution ensuring integration of knowledge management systems and business process. The first part of the paper presents current research in the area of integration of software agents within business processes and the processes of knowledge processing. The second part presents the architecture of a software solution designed to support the modelling of business processes and improve these processes. The third part shows an example of using this architecture.

Proposal for using analysis of software agents usability in organisations

The aim of the paper is to analyse agent solutions on the Polish market using a proposed qualitative research method (AUKP - agent usefulness and knowledge propagation analysis method) that allows for assessment of the usability and degree of knowledge diffusion between the man and computer with reference to the use of agent systems. As will be shown in the paper, previous studies presented in the literature on software agents largely refer to agent metrics describing such properties as autonomy, communication and cooperation, without sufficiently addressing the issue of knowledge transfer between the agent and user and the role of agents in business processes. For the purpose of conducting research, the paper presents a theoretical model of research showing the importance of its different stages. Further, it presents a formal model of research which was used to develop a set of indicators to evaluate the usability of examined agents. The last part discusses the results obtained in an experiment consisting in examining three interface agents used in Polish firms to support their business processes.

Normative Multi-Agent Enriched Data Mining to Support E-Citizens

The current trends in the development of multi-agent systems indicate the possibility to apply the concept of multi-agent systems employing ontologies for encoding the systems domain knowledge and procedural knowledge. Within such structures, the use of knowledge discovery models may represent an enhancement to the systems functionality in the context of discovering relations that can support the users activities. Distributed data mining (DDM) concepts ([19, 11, 18]) demonstrate that multi-agent systems are capable of using knowledge discovery processes in a variety of ways in the context of the process being supported by the agent as well as in order to expand its knowledge. If this is the case, the knowledge discovery becomes an intrinsic component of the agents learning process. The application of norms to support the work of agents, associated with the idea of normative multi-agent systems ([30, 2, 5, 4]), may significantly boost the performance of such systems by directing the agents actions and determining the desirable states of the agent itself as well as of the group it is part of. The chapter aims to discuss the key aspects of the development of multi-agent systems and knowledge discovery systems, and to present a proposal for an architecture of multi-agent systems supported by knowledge discovery systems.

Using Software Agents to Enhance the Functionality of Social Knowledge Portal

Modern knowledge-based organizations require IT solutions that support execution of their business processes through enabling access to codified knowledge regarding these processes. Such knowledge can be gathered and shared using social software such as wikis and blogs. But user generated content often leads to granularity of knowledge. It is often necessary to provide the bigger picture and, especially when organization is divided into many teams, it’s necessary to provide a competence map. One of the concepts that can be applied to address these problems is software agents society, operating on the top of the social software platform. In this paper we present a concept of the architecture of such solution.

Modelling of Software Agents in Knowledge-Based Organisations. Analysis of Proposed Research Tools

The development of the theory of multi-agent systems in the area of their use to support an organisation can be examined in the context of supporting the performance of business processes and knowledge management processes that take place in modern organisations, in particular knowledge-based organisations. Agent technologies created in this area can be considered in categories of software agent societies, where a multi-agent solution is supported by mechanisms for analysing behaviour of such a system. The aim of this paper is to analyse research methodology and scientific tools developed during the three last years by a team of researchers in the specified field. The paper presents theoretical issues connected with the use of knowledge management systems in organisations, partial results of interviews with developers of agent solutions in Poland, a proposal of a methodology for designing agent societies, elements of a developed prototype of an agent solution, findings of qualitative research in the area of usability of software agents and assessments of multi-agent systems supporting knowledge management.

A Multi-Agent Adaptive Architecture for Smart-Grid-Intrusion Detection and Prevention

The present paper deals with selected aspects of energy prosumers’ security needs. The analysis illustrates the concept of implementing intrusion-detection systems (IDS) and intrusion-prevention systems (IPS) as support for agent systems in smart grids. The contribution proposes an agent-system architecture for collecting, processing, monitoring and reacting to smart-grid changes, and an algorithm to build smart-grid operating profiles from device parameters. The approach enables detection of both individual anomalies and changes in typical device behaviour; recommendations for software-agent development for anomaly detection and prevention in smart grids are provided.
